9 Creating notes from PDF highlights and annotations

Many PDF reader tools will allow you to highlight text, add comments, and more. This is a great way to keep track of important points as you’re reading, but none of the highlights or comments you make are visible or searchable in Zotero. In this module, we introduce you to an add-on called Zotfile, which can extract those annotations into Zotero notes… making all of your thoughts easier to organize and manage!
Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, students will be able to
- Install and configure the Zotfile add-on for Zotero
- Annotate PDF files with highlighted text and comments
- Extract PDF annotations into hyperlinked notes in Zotero

An add-on for managing PDF files in Zotero. You can use it to rename your PDF attachments using Zotero data, and to extract PDF highlights and annotations into searchable, taggable Zotero notes.

A formatted text file that serve as an attachment to a Zotero item, or as an item all on its own. In the Zotero interface, the icon for notes looks like a yellow sticky-note.
