Metadata is data about data. It is the structured information, hopefully generated and stored in a consistent (and persistent) format that helps bring meaning and context to digital objects, tabular data, images, audio and visual material.

This instructional guide is meant to provide a basic introduction to metadata, to ground the discussion in how metadata practices operate within York University Libraries, and to demonstrate the value of thinking about metadata in an linked data context.
