Sources of openly licensed photographs and illustrations

  • Creative Commons search
    • Provides a convenient access point to search other openly licensed image/media repositories. However, faculty/admin assistants will have to be careful to verify the CC license for any multi-media they use.
  • Wikimedia Commons
    • A collection of over 45 million media files such as images, sound files, and videos that are either in the public domain or use open licenses such as Creative Commons licenses.
  • Europeana Collection
    • This collection provides access to over 50 million digitized artworks, images, music, artifacts, and books from all over Europe. Each item lists its Creative Commons license and usage restrictions in a very clear manner.
  • Pixabay
    • Provides access to high-quality photos, illustrations, vector graphics, and even videos that are licensed with Creative Commons Zero licenses.
  • Pexels
    • Provides access to over 40,000 high quality free stock photos that are licensed with Creative Commons Zero licenses.
  • Unsplash
    • Provides access to over 300,000 high-resolution photos with Unsplash license (similar to a Creative Commons Zero license).
